Marvin Green – Memorial Service June 28, 2014

Marvin Green, Judy’s father, passed away on May

Here is his eulogy, written by Marvin’s sister Virginia.

“I never expected to need to write a eulogy for my half-brother Marvin Green. My half-siblings on the Harrington side were not long lived. Marvin’s full sister died 12 years ago. I am 80 so my memories have been faded by the years. Marvin Alfred Green was born in Smackover, Arkansas. His father, Johnny Green was working in the oilfields there. Our mother, Linwood Catherine Sims Green, vividly remembered being on the last train out of the area with infant Marvin in her arms during the huge flooding of the Mississippi River in April of that year. She made her way with him to her parents home in Morrilton, Arkansas. She and husband Johnny next lived in Benton, Arkansas.

In 1929 Johnny Green was killed in a logging accident. Linwood was pregnant and again returned to her parent’s home with Marvin. During the course of the pregnancy both of her parents died. Our mother was left pregnant, alone, and soon homeless. In December Marvin’s sister, Johnny Catherine Green was born.My mother never spoke of the circumstances leading to her marriage to my father, Ed Harrington. He had been widowed twice and was 20 years older. In retrospect, I can only describe the often strained relationship as one brought about by mutual need. He had five children and a stepson but only the two younger teenaged boys still lived with him. When I was born in 1933 there were five children in the home, and the depression was at its deepest, in one of the poorest areas in the country. During that year the family moved south about 100 miles to Belfast, Arkansas and a 10 acre farm in a tiny village around a railroad siding. Dad and the boys grew our food, share-cropped and cut pulpwood.

We lived in extremely poor circumstances – but everyone around us was poor. Both parents worked constantly and as soon as we children were old enough, we worked too. My first visual memory of Marvin is of him milking. Another picture in my mind is of him, probably not more than ten or eleven, plowing behind old Bell, barefoot and in blue overalls. Another memory is of him charging into the house, yelling that the crows were in the cornfield and he needed to take the shotgun to scare them off. Our mother being who she was, the gun stayed on the wall. We did have 4H club in our area and he was very proud of personally owning a registered Poland China sow. He had helped the only prosperous farmer around load some hogs and was given the runt of a litter for his work. He hand raised Salamoaney and she did well at the fair. She was probably the gentlest pig who ever lived.

However much work had to be done, school had to come first. Mothers’s father was a college educated Baptist minister descending from a long line of Baptist ministers and college professors. She expected good grades and good behavior and we dreaded bringing home a B on our report cards. Marvin did well at school. As soon as he was old enough he was anxious to find ways to earn money. I can remember him cutting what we called stove wood, wood cut small enough for kitchen cooking stoves, for two dollars a cord. He drove a school bus for one of his high school years – salary was $20.00 a month. His bus driving ended when we moved to the small town of Sheridan in 1944 and were then on the wrong end of the bus route. He soon found an after school and Saturday job in a hardware store. As he was in high school during WWII   with many men gone to war, lucrative summer jobs were available for the older boys. He spent one summer in Kansas laying railroad track and came home thin and brown. The next summer he spent as a messenger on the military base at Pine Bluff, Arkansas. Hours bouncing on a motorcycle seat on rough roads resulted in a cracked tailbone and surgery. Our Sims cousins, who were undertakers, brought him home from the hospital using their hearse in lieu of an ambulance. This brought half the neighborhood tearing over to see if he had died.

Marvin Green graduated from Sheridan High School. He promptly headed for California where several of his father’s relatives lived. As I remember, he first worked with his Aunt Anna and her family in the Lancaster-Pearblossom area. He then relocated to the Tulare area with his cousin Charlie Green. He found work in a department store there and met a beautiful dark haired girl who became his wife. Her large family took him as their own and with them he found the family closeness he had never experienced. Together he and Adalena raised three lovely daughters and he was able to provide for them in a way that he had not been provided for. They both took great pride in their homes which were constantly being improved and were beautifully kept by Adalena. Having a good car was important to him and this was another reward for his hard work.

I don’t think it ever occurred to Marvin to not be a good person .He wanted to do well in the world, to raise his family better than he had been raised, and to be a faithful servant of God. In my eyes he was as much of a success as the Bill Gates of this world. I am proud to have been his sister!”

The Permit

We picked up the building permit on the 24th of June when we returned from Hawaii.


Oh by the way, at this point we have spent $25,000 on fees and permits. We still have a vacant lot.


While it may be ever so humble, there is no place like home. Sort of.  We had to go – today – Wednesday June 18, and we couldn’t stay any longer.

We had to be at the airport at 10:30 giving us plenty of time for a leisurely breakfast.  We decided to go back for the 3rd time to Cheeseburger in Paradise because it is right by the water and they are the most reasonably priced breakfast we found.  It was wonderful to listen to the waves lapping against the rocks as we ate bargain breakfast and then lingered a little.

Our waitress today was Lucile – or Lucy.  She told us that she was the original employee of the two Southern California ladies who came back to Maui to start this restaurant.  She had been working for 25 years in the same place.  She was so friendly – shaking hands with everyone and getting their names and their stories.  We told her it was our last day there and we were on the way to the airport.  She remembered that and commented about it as we finally walked out the door.  She did the same for each of the other groups of people who were there.  What a great waitress!

The plane ride home seemed like it took forever.  Maybe it was because the ticket said we leave at 12:50 p.m. and get to San Jose at 8:45 p.m.  It just seemed longer!  But finally we were home.

Absent from Maui’s 5 star cuisine, was one food group which caused Stan to long for California.


Yes as soon as we landed and picked one very dirty Mini in the long term parking lot, we found the pot of culinary gold at the next stop light!

It just doesn’t get any better than this.

After our pot of culinary gold, we drove home finally getting there at 1:00 a.m. which was 10:00 p.m. in Hawaii time.  So why were we so tired??  What a great vacation!  We will never forget it Warren!


Tuesday, June 17

We were worn out from all our traveling all over the island for the past 2 weeks. It was time to go home the next day.  So we spent day of washing, packing, laying out in the sun, and taking naps.  We cleaned out the refrigerator for lunch, but decided we needed something different for dinner because for Stan nothing sounded good.

While I was napping he looked on Yelp to find what was available.  We decided to go to Star Noodle – an Asian Fusion dinner house.  We looked at the pictures of the food that were on Yelp and decided to try it.


From the comments on Yelp, we were warned to expect to have to wait  –  but we didn’t expect to have to wait 45 minutes.  However, we really wanted to try it so we decided to wait.

The restaurant has a “common area” where everyone sits together.  Stan sat across from me.  Beside me on my left  (5 inches away) was an Asian woman who did not speak English.  On the other side of me (also 5 inches away) was a man who had come with his family and they were in a big group “together” but right next to us.  During dinner Stan said something about Korea and Warren.  The Asian man who was beside Stan started talking in English firmly telling us that what we had ordered was not Korean.  One of the things we ordered was from one country, this other was from this other country – not from Korea! Then I explained that our son was in Korea and that was what my husband had said. I went on to say that we had no idea what we were eating, but it was good.  He calmed down then and said, “Enjoy!” Then he continued his conversation with the woman beside me.    You have to be careful what you say!

Our waitress Paulina was very helpful and explained what the different items on the menu were.  It was amazing how much food we got.

Stan had gone without donuts for 2 weeks, so we HAD to have them. We were really full when we left and so happy that we had tried something different for us.

Monday, June 16

We woke up early again this morning.  In fact so early that we got to Starbucks and we weren’t sure it was open yet!  We enjoyed our coffee/tea and today I had an apple fritter.  Stan had his usual blueberry muffin.

After breakfast we were talking about what were we going to do today.  We had made a list of things we wanted to do and we have almost completed that list.  And we only have 1 more day now to do that.  As we finished our muffin, Stan said, “Let’s just go for a ride.”

We had no idea where we were going – at least I didn’t – we just started driving down highway 30 South from Lahaina and then as the road turned North toward the airport we followed it up to Wailuku.  As Hwy 30 changed to Hwy 340 we kept going Northwest and stopped at Waihee Beach Park that is near Waihee Municipal Golf Course. We walked along the beach there and took these pictures:









After our walk we got back in the car and continued driving up  Hwy 340  (Kahekili Hwy) because the view was so incredible as we got higher and higher.  The sky was that clear,  beautiful blue with puffy white clouds and just the right temperature.  There were houses that had “multi-million dollar views” that we drove by.





Of course most of the best shots were at places we could not stop.  It seemed the higher we went the more extravagant the houses became and the narrower the road became.  There was a sign advertising the best banana bread around.  We thought we would keep driving until we found that, but we reached a point on the now one lane road where we both wanted to go back because it was just plain scary – beautiful but scary. And even if the banana bread was the best, we didn’t feel like it was worth chancing it.

As we came back down from this area we could see Haleakala in the distance.  Every day that we have been here it has been covered with black clouds, so we never wanted to go.  But today, there were only a few clouds that were white.  We decided to go for it.

We stopped at Safeway to get a picnic lunch, then Costco to fill up the car with gas and we were on our way.  As we climbed higher and higher we could see the town below and the ocean waves rolling to shore. It was so beautiful, but my camera didn’t really show what it was like.  In a little over an hour we had driven on the Haleakala Hwy from sea level to 10,000 feet!

We got out of the car to go to the visitor look out point.  Stan took some panoramics (see header for today) of the area around the visitor center.  We started feeling kind of funny so decided to have our picnic lunch.  It didn’t help.  We had been attacked by altitude sickness and needed to go back down the mountain as quickly as we could.  So much for great picture taking opportunities.



We both feel better now, but we are staying in tonight!

Sunday June 15 Father’s Day

We decided to go to breakfast this morning instead of going to Starbucks.  In the shopping center, Cannery Mall in Lahaina, there is a restaurant named Lu Lu’sWe had noticed it before, but today we decided to go in.  The windows open up so the breezes blow through the restaurant making it very pleasant inside.

We sat down by a window and decided that what really tickled our taste buds was the Crab Cakes Benedict. Just the sound of it make my mouth water.  We were deliciously happy with our choice. Eating Canadian Bacon  Benedict will never be the same ever again.





After breakfast, we decided to go to Calvary Chapel at Wahikuli Wayside Park also in Lahaina.  They have a service in a church facility at 8:30 and then go to the park and have another service at 10:30.  The weather outside was beautiful – a slight breeze and even if you were in the sun it was not too hot.



Today the Pastor (Steve Santos) talked about I Samuel 15 where King Saul was chosen by God to be the king of Israel because he was taller than everyone else, good-looking, humble and wanted to do whatever God wanted him to.

He was given power, money,  & position and it destroyed him.  He thought he was above the law and no longer had to do what God asked.  He thought he could do what he wanted and tried to justify doing other than what God asked him to do.

At the end of Saul’s life God was grieved that he had made Saul king.  The question to us was: When we get to the end of our life will it grieve God to have put us in the positions he has or not?

As I think about my dad’s death on this Father’s Day I think about what my Aunt Virginia said in the eulogy she wrote about my dad.  She said he never even considered doing anything other than what he should.  That from his sister!  What a great way for your sister to remember you. How much more important that would be to have that come from God himself.


On our way to Father’s Day dinner look what we saw!  Yes it had been raining off and on all afternoon.


Stan had made reservations to go to Sugar Cane Maui in Lahaina.  We were seated on a balcony overlooking the ocean where we could see another beautiful Maui sunset and watch people as they walked by across the street.



The food was excellent and “memorable” as Stan says.  Our waitress Taran was so helpful with suggesting things.  She would get really excited when we chose something she suggested because she said she knew we would really like it.  And she was right!

This was our appetizer -Sesame Crusted Ahi Tatak (Asian slaw, wasabi, pickled ginger and ponzu).  Incredibly tasty!


Stan chose Roasted Local Monchong Filet. (Kula leek and edamame fondue, sticky rice and Lilikoi beurre blanc).  It melted in your mouth.


I chose Seared Mahi Mahi fillet. (Thai spiced red and green curry broth, coconut scented jasmine rice, Maui gold pineapple salsa and mixed sprouts).  Wow! and just the pefect amount.


Since it was Stan’s night he wanted to have desert and chose Banana Fritters with Chocolate Ganache.  They were brought to us still warm and moist.  Soooo good!


As we ate we enjoyed another Maui sunset that was amazingly beautiful.  The heavens are declaring the glory of God!!


Friday, June 13

Hawaii is one of the most beautiful places I have had the opportunity to see.  Today we drove around in the residential “Upcountry” area of Hawaii.

Hawaiians live in a different part of the island than where tourists live.  Tourists live next to the beach area.  But, Hawaiians live in the “upcountry” on the mountains near the areas where they grow the sugar cane.  As you look up at the mountains there is an area that is green.  That is where the sugar cane grow, and where the majority of the residents live.

We started out this morning going to the Iao Valley State Park where a war was fought between 4 kings to determine who was going to be the king of the Hawaiian Islands.  The weather is cooler than near the beach and the land is a emerald green with waterfalls flowing through the area.  Beautiful!








The sign above says “Eye of the Needle” which is the narrow, pointed mountain where one of the kings would climb and use as a look out during the war.  That would be really hard to climb!

We stayed at the park for a short time and then drove to Paia for lunch.  We walked around the quaint town thinking at first that it was small and just on the main road.  But, we found that it was a lot bigger than we thought.  As we walked around there was a lot of art and clothing stores in this town.  We also looked at the different menus for the restaurants.  We both agreed that we were intrigued by the Mediterranean/Indian restaurant called Cafe de Amis so we walked back to that restaurant.


We both decided on a crepe filled with chicken, avocado, tomato, cheese (for Stan) and Cesar dressing along with a green salad.  We were hungry and again, we forgot to take a picture before beginning to eat.  But I remembered half way through.


After eating, we drove down Hwy 37 and stopped at Kepaniwai Park – Heritage Gardens.   In the park there were different areas dedicated to the different nationalities who had come to Hawaii to work on the sugar plantations and then stayed.  Different cultures who have created gardens for a memorial are the Chinese, Japanese, Filipino, Korean, Portuguese and New England.  Here are a few of the pictures. There was a history of Sun-Yat-Sing who became a revolutionary between China and Hawaii. There was a statue of him farther on down the road.


Stan then told me we were on the back road for the Road to Hana.  He told me that we would drive on it for a while and then turn around.  We drove as far as the Ulupalakua Ranch.  There is a small store to purchase food and tourist trinkets.  Across the way is a wine tasting area where the house was.  It advertised as being halfway to Hana.



The road was soon going into an area where you could not take rental cars.  So we turned around and went back to the condo.  We are eating dinner at the condo tonight.  We are a little afraid to see what the credit card will be. Yikes!

Saturday, June 14

This morning we decided to go to breakfast at the historic Pioneer Inn in downtown Lahaina.  This inn was built by George Freeland who came to Maui as a Mountie, who did not catch the man he was supposed to.  He decided to build a hotel in Maui on the waterfront rather than go back to England and face the consequences there.

The restaurant is a corner open air room that allows one to look at and hear the ocean waves while enjoying your food.  The wait people are very attentive and the food is good.


We both decided to try something different that what we have been eating the last few days.   So Stan had Eggs Benedict and I had an omelet with pineapple and Portuguese sausage- called Mowee Wowee Omelet.

There was a craft fair being set up under the banyan tree as we finished breakfast.  There was a Hawaiian lady who was stringing flowers to make lei’s.  I asked her if I could take her picture.  She told me it was easy to make lei’s and that ones made with the plumaria flower last for a couple of days.




There was a parade in Lahaina this morning in honor of  Hawaiian King Kamehameha who united all of the islands so there was a unity rather than division.  This parade is an annual event and the streets were lined with people who had come to watch.  I took many pictures of the parade.











At the very end of the parade was this guy.  His hat says, “I’m the last guy.”


We walked around a little after that and decided to go back to the condo to get in pool to cool off.








Thursday, June 12

After being out so late last night it would be expected that we would sleep in, but no – we were again up just as soon as it started to get light.

For a change we decided to eat breakfast rather than just have coffee. We went back to Cheeseburger in Paradise to get their great breakfast – 2 eggs, hashbrowns, & toast with coffee/tea for $5.99, which is a great deal.  Today I decided to try guava juice.  It is sweet, but not too much.  I think I have found a new favorite!  It is easy to find here, but will it be easy to find at home?  That remains to be seen.

As we sat waiting for our food, I couldn’t help but notice one of the homeless men who seem to live in the park under the banyan tree in Lahaina. I’m not sure why what I saw touched my heart so much. Someone had given him a simple bar of soap and he was taking a bath and washing his clothes with it in the ocean.  He was so delighted with his gift and was swimming like a young kid though the water.  Something simple and it made his day.

We spent the rest of the day relaxing at the condo, taking naps and just hanging around.  We wanted to be well rested for the dinner cruise   that Stan had purchased before we left.  I was a little apprehensive because of getting so sick on the submarine ride yesterday.  As we were standing in line waiting to board, my stomach was turning.  I did not want to ruin this when we had been looking forward to it for so long.

We spent the entire time up on the top deck with good reason.  It was an absolutely gorgeous, perfect weather evening.  There was a light breeze, blue sky and puffy white clouds.






We left at 5:30 and motored out about a mile from the shore.  Then we turned and headed north going about 1-2 miles an hour.  During the cruise we went as far as Kanapali before turning around and coming back.  That was exactly enough time for the meal.  It was very peaceful and relaxing to sit and watch the shoreline change and have the breeze blow on you.

The first course was a salad that had lettuce, cucumbers, tomatoes, nuts, and cranberries in it with a vinaigrette dressing.  It was very good.  Sorry –  Both Stan and I ate it before we remembered to take a picture of it!  (We are still getting the hang of taking pictures of everything like our kids.)

Next, they brought out the complimentary mai tai.  I know that is THE Hawaiian drink, but I’d rather have something else.  One of my co-workers told me to drink one for her – well you know who you are and I tried – but could not.  I think they had other things at the bar, but I was needing to sit down to keep my stomach under control.  I didn’t really want anything else.

Next they brought out our entree.  Stan had prime rib and I had a macademia nut crusted mahi mahi.

As we were eating our meal, we had the most amazing sunset I have ever seen!  “The heavens were declaring the glory of God” in a huge way!  I tried to get it all in one picture and and couldn’t.  But these pictures shows a portion of how beautiful the sky looked with the colors stretching completely across the sky.




I spent most of my time taking pictures of the sunset while Stan waited patiently for me to finish.  The man who was providing entertainment by singing told us that there was going to be a full moon that would come up as soon as the sunset was over.

Full moons are important to Stan and I because we unknowingly got married on a full moon.  So we sort of celebrate our wedding every time we have a full moon.  When the singer announced there was going to be a full moon, I looked at Stan because I thought he had chosen the day on purpose – but he said he had not.

So then Stan had to patiently wait again while I tried to take pictures of the full moon.  I finally even got out of my seat trying to get a picture and got caught in a picture.


But I finally got a good shot.

It was a wonderful night.  good food, good company, wonderful God who provided the amazing displays of nature.









Wednesday, June 11

We started our morning with walking in beachfront Lahaina just to get some exercise.  It has gotten really, really hot and muggy here so it was nice to start out the morning in the cool.  But as we walked it started getting hotter.

We noticed a craft fair getting set up in the shade “under the banyan tree”.  We looked around a bit and then a little before lunch we decided to come back to the condo and stopped to eat at The Fish MarketWe got Fish and Chips (thankfully only one to share) and still couldn’t eat all of it.

We came back to the craft fair area about 2:00 because we had tickets to get for a submarine ride.  After getting the tickets but before getting on the boat we heard some Hawaiian music and went over to check it out.  There was a group playing and a lady doing the hula to their songs.  They passed out flyers about a show they were doing that night.  We decided to get tickets for the show on Yelp. (Thank you Warren).




We left the Hawaiian music and waited in line to get on the boat for the submarine ride. While we waited the boat docking in the next place came in and several men were really excited because they had caught this 7 foot long swordfish that weighed 50 pounds.  Here is a picture:



We had decided that it might be too shocking of an experience to have two 60+ year olds going snorkeling so we opted to go out to see the fish and coral in a glass bottom boat called The ReefdancerWe could stay in our regular clothes, stay dry, and see what was down under the water. 

That all made logical sense until both of us started sweating like crazy and getting nauseous.  We told the worker blocking the stairs going up on deck that we had to get out of there.  Something on our faces must have given him no doubt of what we said.  We sat on the top deck for the last hour of the trip  (total trip was 2 -1/2 hours) with me fighting hard not to feed the fish.  One of the workers on the submarine told me to hold an ice cold soda behind my ear to ease the nausea.  It really helped!

But no pictures “down under” because we had to run upstairs!  Note to self – “Do not join the Navy,” said Stan.

We were so hot and still nauseous that all we wanted was to get in our pool at the condo.  We hurried home and cooled off in the pool and then slept for an hour.  Next we were on our way to the Slack Key Hawaiian show that we  had purchased tickets for.

We really enjoyed this show.  The singers  George Kahumoko, Jr. and Ledwad Kaapana were so laid back and the music was so relaxing and mellow, along with the cool ocean breezes blowing through the open-air tent setting. Stan and I were not the youngest ones there either! The show started at 7:30 and did not end until 10:00.

Judy got a Lei as a prize from the hula gal because we reponded to their Banyan Tree invite.



Also, the venue was at the prestigious Napili Kai  Beach Resort. A mere 40 years earlier to the day, a much younger Stan Wigh accompanied his family to the same resort. Nostalgia.
